My love affair with Burch and Purchese

I’ve been having a love affair with Burch and Purchese ever since they opened back in 2012 and my brother in law brought home their Xmas edition Christmas cake.  After that, I was hooked.  I’d sneak out to B&P at least once a fortnight to indulge in their sweets.  Here are some of my favourites through the years…

I love the little desserts, where you can get the perfect portion…  All the fantastic flavours and textures…

Love love love the in store displays…  from the whimsical Easter Eggs to the Alice in Wonderland display, all made from chocolate!

Oh and the cakes!  My oh my…. I’m so enamoured by the cakes that the first thing I did when organising my wedding was to go to B&P and order a cake!   I love the layers and perfect combinations of sweet, savoury, salty, soft, mousey, crunchy, cakey.

Ten Minutes by Tractor

Ten Minutes by Tractor is a gorgeous winery with a modern restaurant facing the hillside in which the vines grow.  Was there in summer for my mom’s birthday dinner, and it was an outstanding meal all around.   Each course was matched with a perfect wine from the winery.  As you can see from the pics, the food was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic!

We started with an amuse bouche of tuna tartare.   A small bite that packed a punch – lovely soft tuna, crunchy zesty apple.   Gotta say, I loved the presentation and the spoon in which the tuna sat in.

For entree, I had the “seared tuna with sesame and bean salad, spring onion yogurt“.  It was tasty and light.

My sister had the “charred mackerel with ratatouille, lemon creme fraiche, tomato vinaigrette” and my mom had the “beetroot cured king fish with beetroot, avocado snow, celery panacotta“.  I had a taste of both and they were superb.

For main, I had the modestly described “duck & five spice with fig, soubise, duck jus“.   Putting it out there that this may be the best duck dish I’ve ever had.  The duck was juicy and moist, with crispy skin and the accompaniments went perfectly with the duck.

My mom had the “Flinders Island wallaby with parsnip, slow roasted grapes and walnuts” whilst my sister had the “Cape Grim eye fillet with beetroot, heirloom carrots, parsley emulsion“.  Again, I had a taste of both and they were fantastic.

Given the meal was quite rich, I opted for a light and fruity dessert.  The “strawberry medley with lime cake, lemon verbena and white chocolate espuma, meringue, strawberry ice cream” was perfect!   Sweet, citrusy, fruity and creamy.

My sister chose the “chocolate chiboust with Michel Cluizel chocolate, poached cherries, cherry sorbet, vanilla & kirsch espuma“.   She was happy with her choice (I declined to try any as it might have overwhelmed my dessert) and it looked amazing!

In summary, the food was amazing.  The restaurant was lovely, good service, great wine and good value ($89 for 3 courses!).   In future if I’m ever in the region, I am booking myself in for a meal at Ten Minutes!

Golden Fields and the infamous Lobster Roll…

Golden Fields was delightful.  Sunshine was streaming through the windows, into the minimalist and open restaurant when I was there for lunch (which btw, you can book for!).

Started with the infamous “New England lobster roll, hot buttered bun, cold poached crayfish, watercress and Kewpie” which was everything that was promised.  It was light, tasty and perfectly balanced.  My only criticism is that it was tiny, and costly!  I could have easily had 2 more of these puppies.

Next up we had “Pork belly in white bread bun” which was delicious!  Tasty braised pork belly in soft fluffy white bread… mmmm!

Crispy skin duck, steamed bread, and plum sauce” was delicious – the duck was crispy and salty, and there’s nothing like constructing your own sandwich of duck meat, hop sin and cucumber.  The steamed bread was not as well done as it could be, there was just something a bit off about them in appearance, but when in my mouth, it tasted awesome!

Dessert was “Peanut butter parfait, salted caramel and soft chocolate” and this tiny packet packed a punch!  Salty peanut butter with sweet caramel and chocolate – divine!

Lunch was great, with the crowds being less evasive then the evening sessions and the food being delicious.  The only thing I wished for was more food!  Definitely going back to have more lobster rolls, and to try other things on the menu!

Whisked away to Sydney…

I am a lucky girl indeed, to be flown up to Sydney for my birthday to dine at Guillaume at Bennelong.   I do love the French.

We stayed at the Hilton Sydney, which is a favorite of mine.   I love the minimalist rooms, the location and the general aesthetic of the hotel.  Our room was upgraded, and it included a television in the bath!

Finding Guillaume was a tad tricky.  Between the Japanese tourist, the harbour bridge, and the Opera House, it was not easy spotting the signs and entrance to the restaurant.  However, when we did eventually find it, we were promptly ushered to our table with stunning views of the bridge.

Amuse bouche was a tuna tartare, which was buttery in texture and melts in your mouth.  The tuna was housed in a crunch cone, which added a lovely crunch to it.

The first course was a delightful salmon sashimi, to which my partner commented “they made cold fish taste good”.  My opinion was that it was delicious, but perhaps a bit too many peripherals.  As Coco Chanel said, when you walk out of the house, take one accessory off!

Next up we had a “Royale of Asparagus”, which was perfect!  Sprinkling of crab meat atop asparagus pieces, and custard…  perfect flavour, texture and balance.

The token scallops on cauliflower puree was next, which in my opinion was executed beautifully, however, it’s a dish that’s been done lots before and therefore perfection is expected.

The next dish, was the surprise star of the night.  John Dory with carrots.  It was cooked perfectly, and tasted amazing.  Loved that the dish had 3 different types of carrots.

Last but not least, comes the meat.  I hate to say, but I was terribly disappointed with the duck dish.  I adore duck and pinot noir, but this dish did not do anything for me.   I was so excited about the duck dish, that I didn’t even take a photo!  I so desperately want to love it…  Redemption came in the form of wagyu.  The final dish, 10 grams of wagyu packed a serious punch.  The mushrooms and mash were to die for.

Last but not least, came dessert in the form of a passionfruit souffle.   Tasty and light, a great ending to a great dinner.

No visit to Sydney would be complete without a visit to Adriano Zumbo’s Patisserie.  I think the pictures below speak for themselves…
